Once you’ve done your research and insights step, it’s time to turn it into a document before you ask people to start generating ideas.
-
The briefing document should be a short summary of all the information people need to work on the problem.
-
It should fit on one sheet of paper, and ideally just one side of it.
-
Giving people more info tends to make things more difficult.
-
The job of the brief writer is to filter the information so that only the most important things make it in there.
-
Start-A: Current Situation
-
Start-B: Ideal and end Situation
Your job is to transform a situation. A good solution is an elegant bridge between these two states. The job of the brief is to give people the information they need to point them in the right direction, but enough latitude to explore broadly on the way there.
The information to be recommended to put in brief:
State A:
Current situation
State B:
Ideal and end state
Task:
What it is that will move the situation from State A to State B. This is the summary of the entire brief and its most important. The sentence should be capable of being understood by the average 10-year old.
Timings:
List all the relevant lates, review meetings, presenting to the decision maker, the delivery dat for the solution.
What makes a Good solution?:
5 point the solution to meet
Support Information:
other facts, stats or nuggets of knowledge that might be helpful here? Just put in the most valuable stuff.
Audience:
The problem involve people. Who are they? useful facts about them.
Inspiration:
Project Leader:
point of contact for everyone involved
You need to create a brief that inspires people and ignites their imagination. That encourages them to explore beyond the norm.
